Nigeria Police Academy (POLAC)

Address: Maiduguri Road, Wudil Local Government Area, Kano State, Nigeria,

Location: ,

The Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State, traces its origins to the early 1980s. In 1981, the Nigerian Government requested assistance from the British Government to assess the training needs of the Nigerian Police. This led to the ‘Pacy Report’ in 1982, which outlined future training requirements for the force.

The Academy officially commenced operations in 1988 with two temporary campuses. One was located at the Police Training School, Challawa, Kano, where cadet Inspectors received their training. The other was at the Police College Kaduna, which catered to cadet Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs).

These two campuses were eventually merged and relocated to their permanent site in Wudil, Kano. The permanent site was formally commissioned on April 2, 1996, by the then Head of State, General Sani Abacha. The commissioning included the expectation that the Academy would be affiliated with a university to offer degree-awarding courses.

A significant milestone occurred in 2012 when the Federal Government of Nigeria upgraded the Nigeria Police Academy to a degree-awarding institution. The National Universities Commission (NUC) subsequently recognized it as the 37th Federal University and the 124th University in Nigeria. Academic activities under this new status began in September 2012.

The Academy is structured into four pioneer faculties: the Faculty of Science, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Social and Management Science, and Faculty of Humanities. It aims to produce superior police officers equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to address the complex challenges of policing in a technologically advanced Nigerian society.

Graduates from the Nigeria Police Academy undergo a comprehensive five-year program, combining academic studies with rigorous police training. Upon successful completion, cadets are awarded a Bachelor’s Degree and are commissioned into the Nigeria Police Force as Assistant Superintendent of Police II (ASP).
