About Military
The Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) was established on 5 February 1964. Its inception was a direct response to the defence needs of an independent Nigeria, with the primary objective of training officers for the Armed Forces of Nigeria. Prior to its current designation, the institution was known as the Royal Military Forces Training College (RMFTC). Following Nigeria’s independence in 1960, it was subsequently rebranded as the Nigerian Military Training College. The transformation into the NDA in 1964 marked a pivotal moment in the nation’s military education, focusing on developing a home-grown officer corps.
The fundamental role of the Academy is to instill in each officer cadet the essential knowledge, practical skills, and core values required to meet the rigorous demands of a military officer. This comprehensive development encompasses military, academic, and character formation. Essentially, the NDA serves as a premier institution where carefully selected young men and women are meticulously groomed into well-educated, courageous, virile, and erudite subalterns, prepared to lead and serve the nation.
The academic program at the NDA received a significant upgrade in 1985, attaining degree-awarding status. This enhancement introduced a five-year course duration for the Regular Combatant Course, which is structured into four years of intensive academic training complemented by one year solely dedicated to military training. Cadets enrolled in the Regular Combatant Course undergo the same rigorous intellectual training as undergraduates in conventional universities, alongside their specialized military instruction.
The Academic Branch oversees the academic training of cadets and the administration of civilian staff, functioning much like the academic divisions of traditional universities. This branch also includes the Postgraduate School and the Academy Library. It is led by an Academy Provost, typically a professor, who is supported by the Academy Registrar (a Brigadier General), the Academy Librarian, and the Deans of various faculties. The academic offerings span a wide range of disciplines, categorized under faculties such as Engineering, Science, Art and Social Science, Military Science, and Management Science.
Upon successful completion of the academic program, cadets who demonstrate exemplary character and academic proficiency are awarded Bachelor’s degrees in diverse fields. These disciplines include Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics, Accounting, Geography, History & International Studies, French, Arabic, Biological Sciences, Political Science and Defence Studies, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical/Electronics Engineering.
Beyond its academic and military training, the NDA’s organizational structure includes several key directorates that support its operations and cadet life. These include the Directorate of Coordination, responsible for inter-departmental liaison; the Directorate of Administration, handling military personnel and administrative functions; the Directorate of ICT, managing information and communication technology; the Directorate of Logistics, overseeing supply chains; and the Directorate of Finance, managing the Academy’s financial affairs. Campus life is also enriched by the Cadet Brigade, comprising various battalions, and the NDA Band, which provides music for regimental and social events.
