Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), originally known as the University of Ife, was established in 1961 and officially opened to students in October 1962, initially operating from temporary facilities in Ibadan. Its founding was a strategic initiative by the Western Region government, led by Chief Obafemi Awolowo, to expand higher education opportunities beyond the existing University of Ibadan, particularly in critical fields like engineering, law, and pharmacy. The university was later renamed Obafemi Awolowo University on May 12, 1987, in tribute to its visionary founder.

The university’s relocation to its permanent and expansive campus in Ile-Ife, a 13,000-acre site generously donated by the local community, commenced in January 1967. This new campus quickly gained recognition for pioneering several academic programs in West Africa, including the first faculty of pharmacy, the first department of chemical engineering, and the first faculty of electronics components and electrical engineering. Its medical school adopted an innovative integrated curriculum with a strong community orientation, a model that subsequently influenced the World Health Organization.

In 1975, the University of Ife was designated a Federal University by the military government, marking a significant shift in its governance and funding structure. Since its inception, OAU has experienced remarkable growth in its student population, which now exceeds 30,000. A dedicated Governing Council oversees the university’s policies, finances, and overall administration, ensuring its continued adherence to academic standards and national objectives.

OAU’s academic framework is robust, encompassing 13 faculties and two specialized colleges: the Postgraduate College and the College of Health Sciences. These academic units house over 60 departments, collectively offering an extensive range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The curriculum spans a diverse spectrum of disciplines, including the humanities, arts, natural sciences, social sciences, medical sciences, engineering, and technology, reflecting the university’s commitment to holistic education.

The university is a prominent center for research and innovation in Nigeria. Its medical research endeavors are closely integrated with the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex. OAU has been at the forefront of significant academic and technological advancements, notably pioneering the modernization of traditional bronze-casting technology. Furthermore, it championed the integration of entrepreneurship education into undergraduate curricula, a model subsequently adopted nationwide by the National Universities Commission (NUC). OAU is also recognized as a leading ICT university in Nigeria, having established the first iLab in sub-Saharan Africa in collaboration with MIT.

Life at OAU is enriched by its meticulously planned central campus, characterized by a well-structured road network and striking architectural landmarks. Key facilities include the expansive Hezekiah Oluwasanmi Library, the administrative Secretariat, the University Bookshop, and the Oduduwa Hall. The library, with its capacity to seat 2,500, offers access to over 300,000 titles and 762,000 volumes, and serves as a depository for United Nations publications. The university provides various halls of residence, such as Awolowo Hall, Angola Hall, Alumni Hall, and Moremi Hall, fostering a vibrant and secure living and learning environment. Recreational and competitive sports are facilitated by a modern sports center, where students actively participate in national and regional university games.
