About University
The University of Benin, widely known as UNIBEN, was established in 1970 as an Institute of Technology. Located in the historic city of Benin, the capital of Edo State, Nigeria, the institution was founded to address the growing need for skilled manpower in various technological and scientific fields to support the nation’s development goals. Its establishment marked a significant milestone in expanding access to higher education in the Midwestern Region of Nigeria.
Just a year after its inception, in July 1971, the institution was granted full university status by the National Universities Commission (NUC), officially becoming the University of Benin. This upgrade allowed it to broaden its academic scope beyond technology and engineering. A further significant development occurred on April 1, 1975, when the university was taken over by the Federal Government of Nigeria, transitioning it from a regional to a national institution. This change brought increased funding, resources, and a more diverse student and faculty population.
The university’s mission is to develop high-level manpower for the nation and the world, to advance knowledge through research and scholarship, and to provide services that address the needs of society. It aims to create a learning environment that fosters intellectual freedom, critical inquiry, and the pursuit of excellence. The university is committed to producing graduates who are not only knowledgeable in their chosen fields but also possess strong ethical values and leadership skills.
The University of Benin operates across two main campuses: the Ugbowo campus and the Ekehuan campus. The Ugbowo campus, located along the Benin-Lagos Expressway, serves as the main and largest campus. It houses the central administration, the main library, and the majority of the university’s faculties, including Sciences, Engineering, Law, Pharmacy, and the College of Medical Sciences. The Ekehuan campus, situated in the heart of Benin City, is home to the faculties of Arts and the creative arts departments.
Academically, UNIBEN is structured into a collegiate system, comprising several colleges and numerous faculties, schools, and institutes. Key among these is the College of Medical Sciences, which includes the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, and Basic Medical Sciences. Other prominent faculties include the Faculty of Law, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Education, and Faculty of Pharmacy, each offering a wide array of undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
To support its academic and research objectives, the university is equipped with notable facilities. The John Harris Library, named after a pioneer university librarian, serves as the central library and is a major resource for students and researchers, holding a vast collection of books, journals, and digital materials. Furthermore, the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), a leading federal medical center, provides crucial clinical training for medical students and offers tertiary healthcare services to the wider community.
Campus life at UNIBEN is dynamic and diverse, reflecting its large student population of over 75,000. The university provides on-campus accommodation through a network of halls of residence for both male and female students, although many students also live off-campus in the surrounding communities. Student life is enriched by a wide range of clubs, societies, and sporting activities, which provide opportunities for personal development, social interaction, and leadership training, creating a well-rounded educational experience.
