The University of Jos was established in November 1971 as a campus of the University of Ibadan, with Professor E. A. Ayandele as its first Acting Principal. Initially situated along Murtala Mohammed Way, Jos (the Township campus), it welcomed its first pre-degree students in January 1972. Degree programs in Arts commenced in October 1973, followed by Science and Education the subsequent year. The same period saw the acquisition of the Bauchi Road Campus, which housed the Faculties of Natural, Environmental, Medical Sciences, and Education.

In October 1975, the then military government formally established the University of Jos as an autonomous institution, alongside six other new universities and university colleges across the country. Professor Gilbert Onuaguluchi was appointed as its first Vice-Chancellor, serving from October 1975 to 1978, laying the foundational academic and administrative structures of the nascent university.

The university operates with a clear vision: “To be a globally rated University providing an excellent educational experience with high impact on society.” Its mission is to serve the people of Nigeria and humanity by fostering a culture of excellence, promoting innovation, and delivering an outstanding and inclusive student academic experience that emphasizes good character.

Academically, the University of Jos offers a wide array of undergraduate and postgraduate programs across various faculties. These include Agriculture, Arts, Health Sciences, Education, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Law, Management Sciences, Natural Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Social Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine. The institution prides itself on maintaining a student-to-faculty ratio of 5:1, which facilitates personalized learning in smaller groups.

Campus life at the University of Jos is vibrant and well-supported. The university provides 15 student accommodation buildings, including a dedicated facility for postgraduate students seeking a quieter study environment. Beyond academics, students can engage in a diverse range of activities, with over 100 student groups and numerous sports associations, including six varsity sports clubs and 32 club sports associations. For campus mobility, most students utilize bicycles, complemented by a free shuttle service and car-sharing options.
