The Official Guide to Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria

Choosing where to study after secondary school is one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make. With hundreds of universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education in Nigeria, the process can feel overwhelming. That’s why we’ve created the most comprehensive and easy-to-use directory of accredited tertiary institutions in the country.

This page is your starting point for exploring every NUC-accredited university and NBTE-accredited polytechnic and college. From here, you can dive into detailed information about each school, find your perfect course, and get the resources you need to secure your admission.

Types of Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria

Understanding the different types of institutions is the first step to finding the right fit for your career goals.

Universities are degree-awarding institutions focused on academic and professional programmes, typically lasting 4-6 years. They are regulated by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

  • Federal Universities: Owned and funded by the Federal Government of Nigeria. They are often the most competitive and have relatively lower tuition fees.

  • State Universities: Established and managed by state governments to serve the educational needs of their populace.

  • Private Universities: Owned and operated by private individuals or organizations. They often have smaller class sizes and faster academic calendars but with higher tuition fees.

Polytechnics and Monotechnics focus on technical and vocational education, leading to the award of the National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND). They are ideal for students seeking hands-on, practical skills for the industry and are regulated by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).

These institutions are dedicated to training teachers, primarily for the basic education level. They award the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE), which is the minimum qualification for teaching in Nigeria.

These are specialized, hospital-based institutions that provide a 3-year training program for students to become Registered Nurses (RN) or Registered Midwives (RM). They are accredited and regulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN). This pathway is distinct from the Bachelor of Nursing Science (B.NSc.) degree offered by universities.

These institutions train a wide range of middle-level healthcare professionals and technicians. They offer diplomas and certificates for careers such as Community Health Extension Workers (CHEW), Pharmacy Technicians, Medical Laboratory Technicians, and Environmental Health Officers.

These are highly competitive, federally-run institutions that train commissioned officers for the armed forces and police. Key examples include the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) and the Nigerian Police Academy (NPA). These academies combine academic degree courses with rigorous physical and leadership training, preparing cadets for careers in national service.

Key Factors to Consider When Choosing a School

Don’t just pick a name! A great choice depends on your personal and academic needs. Consider these factors:

  1. Accreditation: This is non-negotiable. Ensure both the institution and your desired course are fully accredited. An unaccredited certificate is worthless.

  2. Admission Requirements: What is their typical JAMB cut-off mark? What are the O’level (WAEC/NECO/NABTEB) credit requirements for your chosen course?

  3. Location & Cost: Consider tuition fees, accommodation costs, and the general cost of living in the school’s city. Is it close to home or do you want to study in a different region?

  4. Career Prospects: Does the institution have a strong reputation in your field of interest? Do they have good industry partnerships or a high graduate employment rate?
