Understanding Different University Grading Systems
CGPA calculations can be confusing because institutions in Nigeria and across the world use different scales. Our calculator supports them all, but here’s a quick breakdown of the most common ones.
The 5.0 Grading Scale (Common in Nigerian Universities)
This is the standard for most federal, state, and private universities in Nigeria.
| Grade | Grade Point | Score Range |
|---|---|---|
| A | 5.0 | 70-100% |
| B | 4.0 | 60-69% |
| C | 3.0 | 50-59% |
| D | 2.0 | 45-49% |
| E | 1.0 | 40-44% |
| F | 0.0 | 0-39% |
Note: The exact letter grade conversions can vary slightly between institutions. Our tool uses the most common standards.
The 4.0 Grading Scale (Common in Nigerian Polytechnics)
This is the standardised NBTE grading system for all polytechnics in Nigeria.
| Grade | Grade Point | Score Range |
|---|---|---|
| A | 4.0 | 75-100% |
| AB | 3.5 | 70-74% |
| B | 3.25 | 65-69% |
| BC | 3.0 | 60-64% |
| C | 2.75 | 55-59% |
| CD | 2.5 | 50-54% |
| D | 2.25 | 45-49% |
| E | 2.0 | 40-44% |
| F | 0.0 | 0-39% |
The 4.0 Grading Scale (Common in Nigerian Colleges of Education)
Colleges of Education that award the Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) use a 4.0 point system.
| Grade | Grade Point | Score Range |
|---|---|---|
| A | 4.0 | 70-100% |
| B | 3.0 | 60-69% |
| C | 2.0 | 50-59% |

How to Calculate Your CGPA Manually
Understanding the formula behind the calculation can help you strategise. The formula is: CGPA = Total Quality Points (TQP) / Total Credit Units (TCU)
Here’s a step-by-step guide:
For each course, find the Quality Point (QP): Multiply the course’s Credit Unit by the Grade Point you scored.
Quality Point = Credit Unit x Grade Point
Calculate Total Quality Points (TQP): Add up the Quality Points from all your courses across all semesters.
Calculate Total Credit Units (TCU): Add up the credit units of all the courses you have taken.
Divide: Divide your TQP by your TCU to get your CGPA.
Example Calculation (1st Semester):
Let’s say a student takes three courses in their first semester on a 5.0 scale:
Course | Credit Units (CU) | Grade Scored | Grade Points (GP) | Quality Points (CU x GP) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
MTH 101 | 3 | A | 5.0 | 3 x 5.0 = 15.0 |
PHY 101 | 4 | B | 4.0 | 4 x 4.0 = 16.0 |
CHM 101 | 3 | C | 3.0 | 3 x 3.0 = 9.0 |
Total | 10 | 40.0 |
Total Credit Units (TCU) = 10
Total Quality Points (TQP) = 40.0
Semester GPA = TQP / TCU = 40.0 / 10 = 4.00
To get your CGPA, you would repeat this for all semesters, then divide the total of all Quality Points by the total of all Credit Units.
How Credit Units (CU) Affect Your CGPA
Every course has a specific Credit Unit (CU), which indicates its weight or importance. Courses with higher credit units impact your CGPA more significantly.
For example:
- General studies (GES) courses → 2-3 Credit Units
- Core departmental courses → 3-6 Credit Units
- Final year projects → 6 Credit Units
Why Credit Units Matter
A 3-unit course where you score an ‘A’ will contribute more to your CGPA than a 1-unit course with the same grade. This is why you should always aim for higher grades in high-credit courses to maximise your CGPA.
