University of Abuja (UNIABUJA)

Address: Main Campus Airport Road, Abuja, FCT, Nigeria,

Location: ,

The University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) was established in January 1988 by the Federal Government of Nigeria. Conceived as a dual-mode institution, it was mandated to offer both conventional and distance learning programs, a pioneering approach in the Nigerian university system at the time. Its establishment addressed the critical need for a higher education institution within Abuja, the newly designated Federal Capital Territory, aligning with the ideals envisioned for the city’s development. Academic activities officially commenced in 1990 with the matriculation of its pioneer students.

Initially, the university operated from a temporary “mini-campus” located in Gwagwalada, consisting of three blocks originally intended for a primary school. Over the years, UNIABUJA has progressively developed its expansive permanent site along the Abuja City Airport Road, a vast land area covering over 11,800 hectares. This transition has allowed for significant infrastructure development, including academic buildings, administrative blocks, and student hostels, though relocation to the permanent site remains an ongoing process. The university’s distance learning offices, which facilitate contact sessions for its programs, are strategically situated within the Abuja municipality.

UNIABUJA is guided by a clear vision: “To develop an institution of higher learning that combines academic excellence with the pursuit of the unity of Nigeria.” Its mission complements this by striving “To provide instructional, research, and public service programmes appropriate to a university of high standing that guarantees academic excellence and to operate a strong and virile distance learning component that ensures equal educational access to a large constituency.” These foundational principles underpin its academic and community engagement efforts.

Academically, the University of Abuja is structured into numerous faculties and colleges, offering a diverse range of diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate degree programs. These include faculties such as Agriculture, Arts, Education, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Law, Management Sciences, Sciences, Social Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine, among others. The institution also houses specialized units like the College of Health Sciences, College of Medicine, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and a School of Postgraduate Studies, continually expanding its academic offerings, such as the planned Geology and Mining program.

Beyond traditional degree programs, the university is committed to broader educational outreach and professional development. It operates a Centre for Distance Learning School, catering to individuals who cannot access conventional university education and those seeking new knowledge or specialized skills. Additionally, UNIABUJA runs consultancy services, a sub-degree program, and an Institute of Education, focusing on the professional needs of teachers and collaborating with government educational bodies to establish linkages within and outside Nigeria on educational matters.

The university fosters a vibrant campus environment, accommodating thousands of students in its hostels on the main campus. It actively promotes research and scholarship, celebrating academic achievements and staff promotions. Recent administrative changes include the appointment of new Deputy Vice-Chancellors and the promotion of numerous academic staff to professorial ranks, reflecting its commitment to academic leadership and growth. The university was recently renamed “Yakubu Gowon University” on 16 December 2024, in honour of former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, for his contributions to national unity.
