Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) is a prominent federal university located in Awka, Anambra State, Nigeria. It also operates a second main campus in Nnewi, along with other locations in Agulu and Ifite-Ogwuari. The university was established on July 30, 1980, as Anambra State University of Technology (ASUTECH) by the Anambra State Government. In 1991, following the creation of Enugu State from the old Anambra, the federal government took over the institution on July 15, 1992, and subsequently renamed it in honor of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Nigeria’s first President.

UNIZIK is duly accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC), affirming its commitment to maintaining high academic standards. The academic resources at UNIZIK are bolstered by the Festus Aghagbo Nwako Library, named after the university’s pioneer Vice-Chancellor. Commissioned in March 2008 and opened to the public in January 2009, the main library building covers approximately 30,000 square meters and can seat an estimated 3000 students. Its Digital Library section further expands its offerings with about 10,000 square meters of space, providing internet access and managed by student librarians to support academic research.

With an estimated student population of 45,000, UNIZIK fosters a vibrant campus life. The university’s commitment to student welfare is exemplified by initiatives such as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) UniZik Chapter, which provides scholarship awards to indigent students.
