Overview of the Programs
1. Basic General Nursing Program
This is a three-year program aimed at providing candidates with the foundational knowledge and skills required for entry into the nursing profession. Upon successful completion of the program, candidates will be awarded the Registered Nurse (RN) certificate, which allows them to practice nursing in various healthcare settings.
2. Post Basic General Nursing Program
This program is designed for Registered Nurses (RNs) who wish to specialize in advanced areas of nursing. It builds on their existing knowledge and provides specialized training in fields such as Midwifery, Pediatrics, and other nursing specialties. The Post Basic program typically lasts for 12 to 18 months, depending on the area of specialization.
Admission Requirements
Basic General Nursing Program: To be eligible for the Basic General Nursing program, applicants must:
- Possess a minimum of five (5) O’ Level credits in subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. These credits must be obtained in not more than two sittings from either WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB.
- Be at least 16 years old by the time of admission.
- Have a strong interest in healthcare and a desire to contribute to the nursing profession.
Post Basic General Nursing Program: Candidates applying for the Post Basic General Nursing program must meet the following requirements:
- Be a Registered Nurse (RN) with a valid practicing license issued by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN).
- Possess a minimum of five (5) O’ Level credits, including English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics (as in the Basic General Nursing requirement)
- Provide proof of professional experience in a clinical setting (if required).
Application Process
Interested candidates are to follow the steps below to apply for the Basic and Post Basic General Nursing programs:
1. Obtain the Application Form:
The application form can be purchased from the College of Nursing Sciences, Mater Misericordiae Hospital Afikpo. Prospective applicants should visit the college’s admissions office or designated sales points to collect the form.
2. Complete the Application:
Applicants should fill in the form accurately with their personal information, educational qualifications, and other required details.
3. Submit Required Documents:
Applicants are to submit photocopies of their O’ Level results (for Basic Nursing) or RN license and certificates (for Post Basic Nursing), birth certificate or age declaration, and recent passport-sized photographs along with the completed application form.
4. Pay the Application Fee:
A non-refundable application fee, as stipulated by the college, must be paid during the form collection. The payment details and the amount will be communicated to candidates at the point of form purchase.
5. Submit the Form:

Entrance Examination and Interview
Upon successful submission of the application, shortlisted candidates will be invited for an entrance examination and an oral interview. The entrance examination is by CBT, and it will test candidates on subjects such as:
