BUK began its journey in 1960 as Ahmadu Bello College, aimed at preparing students for G.C.E. and A-level qualifications in subjects such as Arabic, Hausa, Islamic history, and English Literature. It later became Abdullahi Bayero College, named after the Emir of Kano, and admitted its first undergraduates in 1964. By 1975, it was elevated to a University College, and in 1977, it became the fully-fledged Bayero University, Kano
