Established in 1948 as University College Ibadan, the University of Ibadan (UI) holds the distinction of being the first university in Nigeria. Initially operating under a special relationship scheme as a college of the University of London, it gained full-fledged independent university status in 1962. From its inception, UI offered academic programmes across foundational fields such as Arts, Science, and Medicine, laying the groundwork for its subsequent expansion.

Today, the University of Ibadan stands as a comprehensive citadel of learning, offering a wide array of academic programmes across seventeen faculties. These faculties include Arts, Science, Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Agriculture, The Social Sciences, Education, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, Technology, Law, Public Health, Dentistry, Economics, Renewable Natural Resources, Environmental Design and Management, and Multidisciplinary Studies. This broad academic structure reflects the university’s commitment to diverse fields of knowledge.

Further enhancing its academic framework, the Faculties of Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Public Health, and Dentistry are collaboratively organised as a College of Medicine. The university is also home to numerous specialised academic units and centres, such as the Institute of Child Health, Institute of Education, Institute of African Studies, Centre for Child Adolescent and Mental Health, Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CEI), Institute for Advanced Medical Research and Training (IAMRAT), Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, Centre for Drug Discovery, Development & Production (CDDDP), and Centre for Control & Prevention of Zoonosis (CCPZ).

The vision of the University of Ibadan is to be a world-class institution dedicated to academic excellence, geared towards effectively meeting societal needs. Its mission is to expand the frontiers of knowledge through the provision of excellent conditions for learning and research, fostering an environment conducive to intellectual growth and discovery.

Campus life at the University of Ibadan is vibrant, with 15 halls of residence providing accommodation for approximately 30% of its regular students. Notable halls include Lord Tedder Hall, Kenneth Mellanby Hall, Sultan Bello Hall, Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall, Independence Hall, Tafawa Balewa Hall, Kuti Hall, Queen Idia Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, and the Obafemi Awolowo Hall, which is recognised as the largest female hall in West Africa.

The university boasts a substantial workforce, with a total staff strength of 5,339, and provides 1,212 housing units for both senior and junior staff members. Beyond academics and residential facilities, the campus offers extensive recreational and sports amenities for both staff and students, alongside dedicated botanical and zoological gardens, contributing to a holistic university experience.
