UDUS Appoints a New Vice Chancellor

At its 168th (Special) meeting on Wednesday, 14th August, 2024, the Governing Council approved the appointment of Professor Bashir Garba, MFR, as the new Vice Chancellor of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. Professor Garba’s appointment is for a single term of five (5) years, commencing from 1st September, 2024. Born on 6th June, 1966, Professor Bashir Garba, MFR, previously on Leave of Absence to Sokoto State University, holds a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) in Applied Chemistry from the University of Sokoto (now Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto), and a Masters Degree in Applied Organic Chemistry from the University of Jos, obtained in 1988 and 1994, respectively. He later earned his Ph.D in Applied Chemistry from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, in 1998.

Professor Garba, a native of Sokoto-South Local Government Area of Sokoto State, embarked on his professional journey as a Graduate Assistant at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto back in 1989. His dedication and commitment propelled him to the lofty position of Professor by 2002.

Notably, Professor Garba has held several significant administrative roles both within and beyond the confines of the University. These encompass his service as the Vice Chancellor of Sokoto State University from May 2022 to the present, his tenure as a Commissioner and member of the Sokoto State Executive Council from June 2019 to January 2022, and his role as the Secretary to Sokoto State Government from September 2015 to May 2019. Furthermore, he served as the Rector of the Polytechnic of Sokoto State from August 2012 to September 2015, and as a Director at the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) from April 2006 to March 2010. His illustrious career also includes his directorship at the Sokoto Energy Research Centre (SERC) from August 1999 to 2005.

Throughout his journey, Professor Garba has been entrusted with the chairmanship and membership of numerous committees, both within the University and in various external capacities.
