The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced that candidates applying for Education programmes and Agriculture non-engineering courses are now exempted from writing the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
The announcement was made through JAMB’s official social media page and has garnered both positive and negative reactions from students and parents across the country.
According to the statement made, the new policy is designed to address the need for more students to study education- and agriculture-related courses. Many believe the decision could help boost the number of qualified teachers and agricultural professionals in Nigeria, while some have kicked against it saying that the next set of teachers will not be qualified enough and will be worse than the previous set of teachers.
The announcement mentioned Education programmes and Agriculture non-engineering courses, e.g. B.Ed. Biology Education, B.Ed. Chemistry Education, B.Ed. Mathematics Education, B.Sc. Social Studies Education, B.Sc. Agricultural Economics, B.Sc. Animal Science, B.Sc. Agricultural Extension and Rural Development, etc.
It means that people seeking admissions into these courses may no longer need to write the JAMB UTME before gaining admission.
Yes. Candidates will likely need WAEC, NECO, or GCE (O’Level) requirements in order to apply for and gain admissions.
No. JAMB still exists and many other courses will still require writing the JAMB UTME before admitting candidates
However, some students are still unsure about how the admission process will work without UTME, while others have welcomed the move, saying it could reduce study stress and exam pressure for candidates.
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is expected to release more details and clarify the admission requirements for the affected courses in the coming weeks.
