About University
Modibbo Adama University (MAU), Yola, is a prominent public research university situated in Girei, Adamawa State, Northeastern Nigeria. Established in 1981, it was initially one of seven federal technology universities founded with the strategic objective of fostering science-based research and developing a skilled, innovative, and technologically oriented workforce for the nation. Over the decades, MAU has evolved into a significant academic institution contributing substantially to higher education in Nigeria.
The university’s journey has involved notable transformations. In 1984, it was briefly merged with the University of Maiduguri, operating as the Modibbo Adama Campus (MACUM). However, this merger was reversed in 1988, and the institution regained its autonomous status. A significant renaming occurred in 2011, when it became Modibbo Adama University of Technology (MAUTECH) to honor Modibbo Adama Ibn Hassan (1809-1847), a revered scholar, educationist, and the founder of the Fombina Kingdom (now the Adamawa Emirate). The current name, Modibbo Adama University, Yola, was solidified on January 6, 2021, with the assent of President Muhammadu Buhari to its establishment bill.
MAU is officially accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC), ensuring that its academic programs meet national quality standards. The university is dedicated to advancing science and technology-based research, offering a comprehensive array of degrees, including associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD programs. This commitment to academic rigor and research excellence positions MAU as a vital hub for intellectual development in the region.
The academic structure of Modibbo Adama University is diverse, encompassing seven faculties: Agriculture, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Social and Management Sciences, and Education, along with a College of Medical Sciences. Beyond its traditional full-time programs, MAU extends its educational reach through a Centre for Distance Learning and a Consultancy Services Unit, which offers various diploma and certificate programs. This broad academic offering caters to a wide spectrum of educational needs and promotes lifelong learning.
Research and innovation are at the core of MAU’s mission. Faculty members are actively involved in diverse research fields, particularly in science and technology-related disciplines such as environmental science, engineering, and agriculture. The university actively seeks and maintains partnerships and collaborations with international universities, corporate entities, and governmental and non-governmental organizations, thereby enhancing its research capabilities and global impact.
The university’s campus in Sangere, Girei, provides a conducive and stimulating environment for both learning and research. It features a well-equipped Central Laboratory with specialized units for biochemical, toxicological, analytical chemistry, quality control, geophysics, geochemical, biophysics, material science, microbiology, and molecular biology studies. Furthermore, the university boasts a robust library system, offering extensive print and electronic resources, and provides student accommodation, sports, and fitness programs to ensure a holistic and enriching campus experience for its students.
Modibbo Adama University, Yola, continues to be a pivotal institution for human capital development and digital transformation in Nigeria, especially within the northeastern region. By consistently producing highly skilled graduates and contributing to cutting-edge research and innovation, MAU plays a crucial role in the socio-economic progress of the nation.
