The University of Calabar (UNICAL) traces its origins back to 1973, initially serving as a campus of the esteemed University of Nigeria. In 1975, a significant transformation occurred when it was designated by the national government as one of seven new federal universities, subsequently gaining full independence. Since its establishment, UNICAL has been dedicated to its guiding motto, “Knowledge for Service,” fostering an environment focused on intellectual growth and community contribution.

Academically, the university is a comprehensive institution organized into more than 20 faculties and institutes.
