NYSC Mobilization Now Requires Thesis Submission: Nigeria’s Bold Move to Combat Certificate Racketeering

The Federal Government has instituted one of the most significant changes to the NYSC mobilization process in decades, making digital submission of academic projects compulsory for all graduates beginning October 6, 2025. This reform represents a comprehensive approach to restoring the credibility of Nigerian educational qualifications

Addressing Multiple Challenges

The policy, which operates under the National Policy for the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD), serves multiple purposes according to government officials

  • Quality Assurance: Functions as an independent verification mechanism for continuous academic enrollment
  • Fraud Prevention: Aims to curb certificate racketeering and safeguard Nigeria’s intellectual assets
  • Standard Elevation: Encourages higher quality supervision and academic output

Implementation and Benefits

The new system requires all students to deposit their academic outputs into the national database, with each submission featuring complete attribution to both the student and their academic supervisors. This creates permanent digital documentation of academic work that can be referenced for verification purposes.

Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa had emphasized in March 2025 that “the approved stipulations for mandatory submission of academic outputs… shall become obligatory requirements in Nigeria. The policy applies equally to all educational institutions, regardless of ownership type – public, private, military, or civilian

Notably, President Tinubu has also approved an academic output monetization and reward mechanism that allows both students and lecturers to earn lifetime revenues from their deposited academic works. This innovative approach not only preserves knowledge but also creates financial value for academic contributions.

Scope and Technical Implementation

The directive applies broadly to graduates from Nigerian universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and even Nigerian students studying abroad. The government has clarified that the policy won’t affect those already serving as corps members or those mobilized before the October 6 enforcement date

To support implementation, the Federal Government has mandated critical data bodies like the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to provide inter-organisation data exchange support through Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to facilitate onboarding and data validation

This policy represents a transformative shift in how Nigeria preserves, values, and verifies academic work, potentially raising educational standards while combating fraudulent practices that have undermined the credibility of the country’s qualifications.

I hope these two versions give you excellent options to choose from! The first takes a more direct “what you need to know” approach, while the second emphasizes the broader reform context. Both are optimized for SEO while maintaining a humanized, engaging tone.
