The University of Arizona has scholarships that provide fully funded assistantships. These cover tuition, healthcare, and give you a living stipend of $22,000 each year. Right now, PI Sabrina McNew is looking for students to apply for Master’s and PhD programs at the University of Arizona, USA, specifically in the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology graduate program.
The McNew Lab is a friendly, diverse group that studies birds and the pests that affect them. They use different methods to understand how host and parasite interact, such as field studies, experiments, genetics, immune response, and data analysis.
The McNew Lab has funding for three types of projects:
a) A Master’s project starting in January 2026 that looks at how baby birds are affected by Philornis pests in the Galapagos. This project is co-supervised by Sabine Tebbich from the University of Vienna. You need to be interested in international field work and have advanced/native Spanish or German skills.
b) A PhD project starting in August 2026 that studies how Galapagos birds evolve and adapt to pests. You need to have an interest in international fieldwork and advanced/native Spanish, as well as interest or experience in genetics.
c) Another PhD project starting in August 2026 that focuses on interactions between birds and parasites in Sonoran birds. You should be interested in fieldwork and have experience working with birds or parasites.
Benefits
- All graduate students in the McNew Lab will receive assistantships for their entire program.
- Selected students will get $22,000 each year for living expenses.
- The scholarship covers tuition and health care costs at the University of Arizona.
Eligibility
To apply for the University of Arizona Graduate Assistantship, you need to:
- Have some experience working with wild birds or parasites, but no specific skills are required.
- Have a good understanding of ecology and evolution.
- Be able to share clear and interesting research ideas and understand what graduate school is about.
- Be self-motivated, but also want to work in a collaborative and supportive research setting.
- Have interests that match well with those of the McNew Lab.
