BUK Opens Application for 2025/2026 Remedial Science Program

Bayero University, Kano (BUK) has started the sale of forms for admission into its 1-year Remedial Science Program for the 2025/2026 academic session. The program is created to help students gain a strong science foundation similar to A-level studies. It also helps candidates prepare for the UTME, develop basic practical knowledge, and correct missing O-level credit passes.

For students who plan to study science-related courses in the university, this program explains the admission requirements, available subjects, fees, and the steps needed to apply.

Purpose of the Remedial Science Program

The university explained that the program is meant to:

  • Give students a strong A-level academic foundation
  • Prepare candidates for the UTME examination
  • Help students develop practical academic skills
  • Allow candidates to correct missing O-level credits before entering a degree programme
Eligibility

Candidates who have SSCE O-level results or other equivalent qualifications can apply if they meet the required conditions.

O-level requirements

Applicants may apply if they have:

  • At least five O-level credit passes in relevant science subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, in not more than two sittings, or
  • Fewer than five credits, provided the missing subjects are corrected before admission into a degree programme
Admission Opportunity After the Program

Students who successfully complete the remedial program

and obtain five O-level credits including English and Mathematics can apply for admission into science-based degree programs. They must also meet the minimum UTME score required by Bayero University.

Candidates who do not meet the UTME requirement may be considered for remedial part-time degree programs offered by the School of Continuing Education (SCE). Such candidates will still need to complete JAMB regularization.

Degree Programs available After Completion

After finishing the programme and meeting the UTME requirements, students can apply for admission into Level 100 in about forty-five science-related courses offered in the following areas:

  • College of Natural and Pharmaceutical Sciences
  • College of Health Sciences
  • Faculty of Agriculture
  • Veterinary Medicine
  • Computing
  • Earth and Environmental Sciences
  • Education
  • Engineering
  • School of Continuing Education (SCE)

Structure of the Remedial Program

The programme is run under the College of Natural and Pharmaceutical Sciences and lasts for one academic session.

Students will study Mathematics and choose any three of the following subjects:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Geography
  • Physics

The courses are designed to strengthen students’ knowledge and correct O-level weaknesses. Optional courses such as English Language Proficiency and Computer Mastery will also be offered at small extra costs.

Start Date

The 2025/2026 remedial session is expected to begin in May 2026. Students who achieve the required BUK UTME score in 2026 will be able to apply for admission into degree programmes for the 2026/2027 academic session after completing the university screening exercise.

Program Fees

The university has listed the following charges:

  • Application fee: ₦5,000 for online processing and screening
  • Acceptance fee: ₦2,000 for admitted candidates (foreign students pay $10)
  • Registration fee: ₦60,000 for admitted candidates (foreign students pay $100 tuition)

How to Apply

Candidates should apply through the BUK Remedial Science application portal by following these steps:

  1. Click Sign Up at the bottom of the page.
  2. Create an account and log in.
  3. Upload a recent passport photograph and fill in the required details.
  4. Make payment using a debit card or bank transfer through Remita.
  5. Scroll to the right and select Check Payment Status to confirm payment.
