Beginner’s Guide to the 2026 Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Application

The Commonwealth Shared Scholarship (CSSS) is a special scholarship where the UK university and the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) both share the funding. It is one of the top fully-funded Master’s scholarships in the UK, made to help students from lower and middle-income Commonwealth countries.

Below is the simple step-by-step guide for applying for the 2026/2027 Commonwealth Shared Scholarship.

Step 1: Apply to a UK University and Get an Offer
  • Check the official CSC list of UK universities taking part in the scholarship.
  • Choose a Master’s course that is specifically approved for the CSSS (not all courses qualify).
  • Apply directly to the university through its online portal.
  • Try to get a conditional or unconditional offer.
Step 2: Gather All Your Documents

Before starting the CSC application, make sure you already have:

  • Academic transcript
  • Degree certificate
  • Three recommendation letters
  • Your university offer letter (conditional or unconditional)
Step 3: Go to the CSC Online Application System
  • Create an account on the CSC application portal for the 2026 intake.
  • Check your email for verification messages (including your spam folder).
  • You may need the Microsoft Authenticator app for verification codes.
Step 4: Fill in Your Personal and School Details
  • Enter your personal information, academic background, work experience, and contact details.
  • Add the details of the UK university and course you applied for.
  • If you do not have your offer yet, you can still enter the university name and continue your application.
Step 5: Write the Development Impact Essays

These essays are the most important part of your application. They include:

  1. How your study relates to development problems (200 words)
  2. How you will use your skills after the program (100 words)
  3. What change you expect to create (250 words)
  4. How you will measure your impact (100 words)
  5. Your goals during the award (250 words)
  6. Career plans for the next 5 years (250 words)
  7. Long-term career plans (250 words)
  8. Simple outline of your study plan (120 words)
  9. Detailed plan of study (300 words)
  10. Your motivation and background (500 words)
  11. Volunteering and leadership experience (500 words)
Tips for Writing Your CSSS Essays
  • Connect your course to a real need in your home country (match it to CSC development themes).
  • Explain how you will use what you learn when you return home—be specific and use SMART goals.
  • Show leadership, using real examples from your life (use the STAR method: Situation, Task, Action, Result).
Step 6: Upload All Your Documents
  • Upload all required documents in the correct format (usually PDF under 5MB).
  • Upload your three reference letters too.
Step 7: Final Check and Submission
  • Review your entire application carefully.
  • Make sure everything matches your documents.
  • Submit before the deadline (usually December or January).

After submitting, the UK university will review applications and nominate the best candidates to the CSC.
The CSC then makes the final selection based on academic performance and development impact.

Successful applicants are usually informed between March and May 2027.
