Required Documents for International Students to Study Masters in the USA

The United States remains one of the top destinations for international students pursuing a master’s degree. However, gaining admission to a U.S. university involves a detailed application process that requires a series of important documents.

This article outlines all the required documents international students need to study a master’s program in the USA, categorized by stages of the application process: before admission, during visa processing, and upon arrival.

I. Academic & Admission Documents

These are the documents you’ll need to apply to your desired universities:

Bachelor’s Degree Certificate

You must hold a recognized undergraduate degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s. This certificate proves your academic eligibility for postgraduate studies.

Academic Transcripts

Detailed academic records showing courses taken, grades earned, and degree classifications. They should:

  • Be in English (or accompanied by certified translations)
  • Come from accredited institutions
  • Be sealed and signed by your university registrar
Standardized Test Scores

Depending on your program, U.S. universities may require one or more of the following:

  • GRE (Graduate Record Examination) – Common for STEM and some business programs
  • GMAT – For business and management-related degrees
  • TOEFL / IELTS / Duolingo English Test – Required for non-native English speakers to prove proficiency
Statement of Purpose (SOP)

An essay explaining:

  • Your academic background
  • Career goals
  • Why you chose the particular university/program
  • How it aligns with your future aspirations
Letters of Recommendation

Typically, 2-3 letters are required from:

  • Professors who taught you
  • Research supervisors
  • Employers (if applying to professional programs)

Letters should be on official letterhead and speak to your academic strengths, work ethic, and suitability for graduate study.

Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV)

Especially important for professional programs or research-based degrees. Include:

  • Academic qualifications
  • Work experience
  • Projects and research work
  • Skills and certifications

II. Financial & Immigration Documents

Once you’re admitted, you’ll need to demonstrate financial ability and process your student visa.

Valid Passport

Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay in the U.S.

Proof of Financial Support

You must prove you can finance your studies and living expenses for at least one year. This may include:

  • Bank statements (showing sufficient funds)
  • Scholarship award letters
  • Financial guarantee letters (from sponsors or parents)
  • Affidavit of support
Form I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility)

Issued by the U.S. university after you’re admitted and have provided proof of financial support. It’s needed to apply for the F-1 Student Visa.

SEVIS Fee Receipt

Before your visa appointment, you must pay the SEVIS I-901 fee (usually $350) and keep the receipt as proof of payment.

DS-160 Confirmation Page

The DS-160 is the non-immigrant visa application form, completed online. After submission, print the confirmation page with the barcode.

F-1 Visa Appointment Letter

Confirmation of your scheduled interview at the U.S. embassy or consulate.

Passport-sized Photographs

According to U.S. visa specifications (2×2 inches, white background).

III. Post-Visa/Arrival Documents

Once you get your visa, these documents will be necessary for travel, entry into the U.S., and university enrollment.

Visa Stamp

Once approved, your F-1 visa will be stamped in your passport. Verify all details before traveling.

Air Ticket & Travel Insurance

Ensure your travel dates align with your program’s start date.

Health & Immunization Records

Some universities require:

  • Proof of vaccinations (MMR, Hepatitis B, COVID-19, etc.)
  • Recent medical check-up reports
  • Health insurance documents (provided by university or private plans)

Carry your offer or admission letter to show at immigration and during enrollment.
