The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of Ahmadu Bello University has released an official update dated 16th March 2026 concerning the disbursement and refund process of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund for graduated students.
Current Situation
According to the SRC, several graduates have observed that their NELFUND portal status shows “Disbursed.” However, a large number of these payments have not yet been reflected in the university’s accounts.
Following discussions with relevant university authorities, it was confirmed that administrative delays between NELFUND and the institution are responsible for the discrepancy. Efforts are currently underway to resolve these delays.
Refund Approach Adopted by the University
To ensure transparency and fairness, the university has opted for a centralized (collective) refund process rather than handling refunds individually.
Before any refunds are processed, the institution is carrying out a comprehensive three-step verification exercise.
Verification Process
1. Payment Identification
The university is confirming which student accounts have been successfully credited by NELFUND and identifying those still pending.
2. Student Status Verification
Authorities are distinguishing between students who have officially graduated and those classified as extra-year students.
3. Fee History Audit
This involves verifying students who paid their school fees personally before applying for the loan, as against those who relied on NELFUND for payment.
Delay in Refund Disbursement
NELFUND has indicated that some payments already marked as “Disbursed” are still undergoing final processing stages. As a result, the university has clarified that refunds will only begin after all pending payments are received and the verification process is fully completed.
SRC’s Position and Assurance
The SRC Public Relations Officer, Oladayo Amos, acknowledged the concerns of affected graduates. He emphasized that the large volume of records involved requires careful coordination to avoid errors.
Students are therefore advised to remain patient as the university concludes the necessary procedures.
Further Updates
The SRC assured students that it will continue to engage with relevant authorities and will provide timely updates as new developments arise.
