FG Clears Up Confusion on New Secondary School Subject Choices

The Federal Ministry of Education has released a simple clarification to clear up the confusion many students, parents, teachers, and school owners have about choosing subjects under the new Senior Secondary School Curriculum. This message became necessary because a lot of wrong information has been spreading online.

In the statement signed by the Ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, and the Minister of State for Education, Professor Sa’id Swaiba Ahmad, explained that no subject has been removed or restricted. Students are free to choose any approved subject as long as their choices are guided by their school, parents, or trained counsellors.

The Ministry also explained that science students can pick subjects usually seen as arts or social sciences, and arts or commercial students can also take science-related subjects. The curriculum was designed this way to give students more freedom and help them follow their interests and career goals.

They also cleared the air about the subject formerly called ICT (Information and Communication Technology). It has now been renamed Digital Technology, but only the name changed—the content remains the same. Any student who took ICT before can still choose Digital Technology for registration and exams, including WAEC.

On Trade Subjects, the Ministry said there are six approved trade options. Students can register for any of them if their schools teach the subject. However, if a school does not offer any trade subject, the student does not have to register for one as a third option.

The Ministry assured everyone that WAEC registration is still ongoing and urged schools to guide students so they choose subjects that match their strengths and future plans.
