JAMB Considers Review of UTME 2025 Results After Backlash

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has initiated an urgent review of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results following widespread complaints from candidates and stakeholders. This decision comes in response to an unprecedented number of low scores and allegations of technical glitches during the examination process.

📉 Alarming Statistics and Public Outcry

Out of approximately 1.95 million candidates who sat for the 2025 UTME, over 1.5 million scored below 200 out of a possible 400 marks, representing about 79% of the total candidates. Only 12,421 candidates, or 0.63%, scored 300 and above, while 24,535 candidates scored less than 100 marks.

The release of these results sparked a nationwide outcry, with candidates and parents expressing disbelief over the low scores. Social media platforms were flooded with the hashtag #ThisIsNotMyResult, as many candidates claimed their scores did not reflect their performance or preparation.

🛠️ JAMB’s Response and Review Process

In light of the backlash, JAMB announced an expedited review of the 2025 UTME results. The board’s spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, stated that the review would encompass all stages of the examination process, including registration, examination execution, and result collation.

To ensure a thorough and transparent review, JAMB has engaged external experts, including members of the Computer Professionals Association of Nigeria, Vice Chancellors, Chief External Examiners, and representatives from the Educational Assessment and Research Network in Africa.

The board emphasized that if any technical issues or discrepancies are identified, appropriate remedial measures would be implemented promptly. These measures could include adjusting affected scores, scheduling new exams for impacted candidates, and releasing detailed mark sheets to enhance transparency.

⚖️ Legal Actions and Demands for Transparency

The controversy has also led to legal actions against JAMB. Alex Onyia, CEO of Educare, announced plans to file a class-action lawsuit on behalf of over 8,000 affected students. The lawsuit demands full disclosure of the UTME marking scheme and detailed scoring information to allow students to verify the accuracy of their results.

Onyia highlighted cases where candidates who had previously scored high marks experienced significant drops in their 2025 UTME scores, raising concerns about the examination’s integrity.

📅 Next Steps and Expectations

As JAMB conducts its review, candidates are advised to stay informed through official channels and await further announcements. The board has assured the public of its commitment to addressing all valid concerns and ensuring the credibility of the UTME process.

Candidates experiencing issues with their results should contact JAMB through official communication channels and provide detailed information about their concerns.
