JAMB Plans to Punish 180 Candidates for Using Fake Websites

In a decisive move to uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s tertiary education admission process, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced plans to sanction 180 candidates who attempted to cheat by engaging with fake websites ahead of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

🎯 JAMB’s Sting Operation: Decoy Websites to Trap Exam Cheats

In a strategic effort to combat examination malpractice, JAMB deployed decoy websites that mimicked those operated by fraudsters. These fake platforms were designed to lure candidates seeking illicit assistance, such as leaked examination questions or score augmentation. Unbeknownst to the candidates, these sites were traps set by JAMB to identify and apprehend individuals attempting to compromise the examination’s integrity.

💸 The Cost of Cheating: Candidates Pay Up to ₦30,000

The sting operation revealed that each of the 180 candidates paid amounts ranging from ₦30,000 and above to these fraudulent sites, hoping to gain unfair advantages in the upcoming UTME. These transactions not only resulted in financial loss but also exposed the candidates to severe penalties for violating examination regulations.

⚖️ Consequences: Result Cancellation and Legal Action

JAMB has made it clear that the implicated candidates will face stringent consequences. Sanctions include the cancellation of their UTME or Direct Entry results and potential legal prosecution. This firm stance underscores JAMB’s commitment to deterring examination malpractice and preserving the credibility of its assessment processes.

🧪 Mock Exams: A Dual Purpose Initiative

The 2025 UTME mock examination, which saw participation from over 211,000 candidates, served a dual purpose. While providing candidates with a rehearsal opportunity, it also functioned as a testing ground for JAMB’s enhanced security measures, including the deployment of decoy websites. This proactive approach aims to identify and address potential vulnerabilities before the main examination. The real UTME exam will start on Thursday, 24th April, 2025.

🛡️ A Call for Vigilance: Avoiding Fraudulent Platforms

JAMB’s Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, has urged candidates to exercise caution and avoid patronizing websites that promise shortcuts to examination success. He emphasized that such platforms are designed to exploit candidates and compromise the examination’s fairness. Candidates are advised to rely solely on JAMB’s official website, www.jamb.gov.ng, for accurate information and legitimate services.

📢 Final Thoughts: Upholding Examination Integrty

JAMB’s recent actions highlight its unwavering commitment to maintaining the integrity of Nigeria’s tertiary education admission process. By proactively identifying and sanctioning candidates who attempt to cheat, the board sends a clear message that malpractice will not be tolerated. Candidates are encouraged to prepare diligently and ethically, ensuring a fair and credible examination environment for all.
