JAMB Releases 2025 Rules and Regulations for UTME Candidates

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released the official guidelines and regulations for candidates preparing to take the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). These directives are designed to ensure a fair, transparent, and efficient examination process. All prospective candidates are advised to familiarize themselves with these rules to facilitate a smooth experience during the examination period.

1. Registration Process

  • Eligibility: Candidates must have completed or be in the process of completing their Senior Secondary School education or its equivalent.
  • National Identification Number (NIN): Possession of a valid NIN is mandatory for registration. Candidates are required to generate their profile codes using their NINs.
  • Profile Creation: Candidates must create a JAMB profile by sending their NIN to 55019 or 66019. A unique profile code will be sent to the candidate’s phone number, which is essential for purchasing the e-PIN and completing the registration.
  • E-PIN Purchase: With the profile code, candidates can purchase the e-PIN from designated banks, mobile money operators, or online platforms.
  • Completion of Registration: Candidates must visit accredited Computer-Based Test (CBT) centers to complete the registration process, which includes capturing biometric data and photographs.

2. Examination Conduct

  • Mode of Examination: The UTME is a computer-based test (CBT) assessing candidates in four subjects: Use of English (mandatory) and three other subjects relevant to the chosen course of study.
  • Duration: The examination lasts for two hours.
  • Prohibited Items: Candidates are strictly prohibited from bringing the following items into the examination hall:
    • Electronic devices such as calculators, mobile phones, smart watches, and timers.Writing materials like pens, pencils, and paper; these will be provided at the examination center.
    • Eyeglasses with embedded cameras or smart lenses.
    • Any other gadgets or items that could compromise the integrity of the examination.
Possession of any prohibited item may lead to disqualification and further disciplinary actions.

3. Examination Malpractice

  • Zero Tolerance Policy: JAMB maintains a zero-tolerance stance on examination malpractice. Candidates found engaging in any form of malpractice, including impersonation, cheating, or disrupting the examination process, will face severe consequences, such as cancellation of results, disqualification from future examinations, and possible legal action.

4. Mandatory Biometric Verification

JAMB has implemented biometric verification as a compulsory requirement for all UTME candidates. This measure is designed to prevent impersonation, examination malpractice, and other fraudulent activities.

  • During UTME registration at accredited Computer-Based Test (CBT) centers, candidates’ fingerprints are captured and stored in JAMB’s database.
  • Candidates must undergo biometric verification before they are allowed into the examination hall.
  • Biometric verification is also required at different stages of the admission process, including checking results and accessing admission status on JAMB CAPS.
  • Any candidate who fails biometric verification will not be allowed to sit for the examination. Manual verification methods (such as ID cards or signatures) will not be accepted as alternatives.
  • If a candidate attempts to manipulate the biometric verification process, they risk having their results canceled and facing disqualification from future JAMB exams.

5. Examination Slip Requirements

The JAMB exam slip is a critical document that candidates must present on the day of their UTME. It contains essential details about the examination.

Exam Day Requirements

  • Candidates must bring a printed copy of their JAMB exam slip to the CBT center.
  • The slip should be in good condition (not torn or defaced).
  • Electronic versions (e.g., on a mobile phone) will not be accepted.

6. Post-Examination Procedures

  • Result Release: UTME results are typically released within a few days after the examination. Candidates can access their results through the JAMB portal using their registration details.
  • Cut-Off Marks: Each tertiary institution determines its own cut-off mark for admission. Candidates are advised to consult the respective institutions for specific requirements.
  • Admission Process: Admission into tertiary institutions is processed through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS). Candidates must monitor their admission status and accept or reject offers within the stipulated time frame.

Special Provisions

  • Candidates with Disabilities: JAMB provides accommodations for candidates with special needs. Such candidates should indicate their condition during registration and communicate with the examination body for necessary arrangements.
  • Foreign Candidates: Nigerian candidates residing abroad can register for the UTME at designated centers outside Nigeria. They must adhere to the same guidelines as domestic candidates.

Key Dates and Deadlines

  • Registration Period: The 2025 UTME registration commenced on February 3, 2025, and concluded on March 8, 2025.
  • Examination Dates: The UTME is scheduled to take place from April 25, 2025.
  • Mock Examination: An optional mock examination is available for candidates who express interest during registration. The date for the mock exam will be announced on the JAMB portal.

Communication and Updates

  • Official Channels: Candidates are advised to rely solely on information from official JAMB channels, including the JAMB website (www.jamb.gov.ng), accredited CBT centers, and recognized media outlets.
  • Avoiding Fraud: Be cautious of fraudulent individuals or organizations claiming to offer assistance with registration or admission. JAMB does not endorse any third-party services.
