Benefits & Funding Details

  • Monthly stipend:
    • €992 for Master’s candidates
    • €1,300 (rising to €1,400 from Feb 2026) for doctoral-level participants.
  • Insurance coverage: Health, accident, and personal liability financed by DAAD.
  • Travel allowance: Lump-sum for return airfare; may need upfront payment and later reimbursement.
  • Additional support:
    • Rent subsidy (subject to availability)
    • Family allowance for those with dependents.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Citizenship of a DAAD-eligible developing or newly industrialized country, such as Nigeria.
  • Bachelor’s degree (typically 4-year or equivalent) in a field related to your study area; degrees older than six years are generally not accepted).
  • Minimum two years of professional experience, ideally in development-related roles.
  • Academic excellence: usually top third of class.
  • No more than 15 months of residency in Germany prior to applying.
  • Language proficiency:
    • English programs: IELTS ≈ 6.0 or TOEFL ≈ 80 iBT.
    • German-taught programs: B1 German + TestDaF/DSH.

Application Procedure & Timeline

  3. Select up to three EPOS-eligible programs, starting with the Free University of Berlin.
  4. Prepare documents:
    • DAAD application form
    • Europass CV
    • Motivation letter(s) (one per course)
    • Academic transcripts & certificates
    • Proof of work experience
    • Language certificates
    • References; for PhD, include research proposals.
  5. Apply directly to the university, enclosing all required documents. DAAD doesn’t accept direct applications).
  6. University shortlists and nominates candidates; shortlisted applicants are asked by DAAD to upload materials to their portal.
  7. Final selection by DAAD, informed typically a few months after nomination.

Important to note: Each program has its own deadline, frequently between August and November 2025, with studies beginning in summer or winter 2026.
