Eligibility & Selection Criteria

Applicants should:

  1. Hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree with high academic achievement (equivalent to First-Class Honors in NZ)).
  2. Demonstrate strong academic references and/or a publication record.
  3. A graduate of any university within or outside of New Zealand who have commenced their doctoral study at Victoria University of Wellington.
  4. Show research potential and fit with supervisor, school, and university priorities.
  5. For current VUW PhD students enrolled over 6 months, scholarship tenure may be reduced at the Committee’s discretion.

Applications are assessed on academic excellence, research quality, and strategic alignment, such as interdisciplinary or industry-linked research.

Tenure & Conditions

  • Duration: Up to 3 years full-time, commensurate with doctoral study.
  • Deferments: May be granted—for example, due to research needs—on a case-by-case basis .
  • Employment limits: Scholarship recipients can work up to 600 hours/year with supervisor approval.
  • Progress reporting: Six-monthly progress reports are required.
  • Termination: Scholarships may be terminated if progress is unsatisfactory or enrolment does not remain full-time.
