JAMB Introduces New Rule for 2026 UTME Registration

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has introduced a new rule for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) registration. From now on, every candidate must state whether they are already a student in any university, polytechnic, or other higher institution either in Nigeria or abroad.

This change is meant to reduce cases of impersonation and exam malpractice, which were common during the 2025 UTME.

Why JAMB Made This Change

According to JAMB’s 2025 UTME Infraction Report, over 90% of those caught cheating were already students in other institutions. Many of them tried to take advantage of the system for dishonest reasons.

To prevent this, JAMB has added a compulsory question in the 2026 UTME registration form. Every applicant must now clearly declare their current student status before completing registration.

What Happens If You Give False Information

Candidates who lie about their student status or hide the truth will face serious penalties. These may include:

  • Cancellation of their registration
  • Withdrawal of any admission already given
  • Legal action under existing laws

JAMB warns that it will not tolerate any act that could damage the credibility of its exams or the fairness of the admission process.

JAMB’s Goal: Fair and Transparent Admissions

The Board reminded the public that UTME is mainly for new admission seekers. Those who are already students in any tertiary institution must not register without stating it clearly.

JAMB says it remains committed to fairness, honesty, and transparency in Nigeria’s admission system. This new policy is part of its effort to build public trust and protect the integrity of higher education.

All candidates are strongly advised to follow the new registration rules. This step will help JAMB maintain the credibility of the UTME and ensure that only qualified applicants take part in the exam.
