The University of Adelaide offers the prestigious Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarships to outstanding candidates—both domestic and international—who are aiming for a Master’s by Research or PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) at Adelaide.
Scholarship Benefits
- Living Stipend: For the duration of the scholarship
- Tuition Funding: 100% fee waiver via RTP Fee Offset for standard program duration
- Allowances for International Students:
- Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
- Up to AUD 1,500 relocation assistance
- Additional allowances for research travel or thesis publication
- Duration:
- Master’s by Research: up to 2 years
- PhD: up to 3.5–4 years (some allowances for extensions)

Who Can Apply?
- International applicants with an honors degree (or equivalent) eligible for full-time research admission
- Domestic students (Australian, NZ citizens/permanent residents, humanitarian visa holders) applying for commencement or continuation in an eligible research program
- Academic excellence – strong grades, honors/class I or II, and relevant research output such as publications and research experience strengthen applicants’ competitiveness
- Candidates who meet the requirements of the conditions of the award
Key Dates for 2026 Intake
For international applicants aiming to begin in mid–late 2026:
- Merit scholarship round opens: June 9, 2025
- Closes: February 2026
- Results announced: May 2026
- Program commencement: July–December 2026

- Available scholarship opportunities (internally and externally funded) will be listed throughout the year on the Find a Research Project webpage if there is a project connected to the scholarship.
- The majority of scholarships are offered during the Merit or Project scholarship rounds.
- Scholarships are awarded to the highest-ranked eligible applicants.
- Whether you are awarded a scholarship will be determined by the quality of your application relative to the other applications received.
- Your competitiveness for scholarship(s) will be based on a combination of academic merit, research experience, and alignment with the University’s strategic goals.
Application Process
- Identify a supervisor and project, or pitch your own aligned to Adelaide’s research themes (e.g., Food & Wine, Health, Sustainable Green Transition)
- Complete the admission+scholarship application online, selecting the RTP scholarship option
- Attach documents: Academic transcripts, honors degree certificate, CV, research proposal, supervisor endorsement, proof of English proficiency, passport for internationals
- Submit by deadline: ideally early in the merit round, before mid-February 2026
- Track outcomes: Notifications expected by May 2026 – international winners generally start in Semester 2, 2026
