NECO Opens First UK Examination Center in London

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has opened a new examination center in London, United Kingdom, to make it easier for Nigerians living abroad to take NECO exams. This move is part of NECO’s plan to give more people access to credible exams, no matter where they live.

The new center was launched during the Education Matters Conference UK 2025 by NECO’s Registrar and Chief Executive, Prof. Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, in partnership with Barnfield Education Ltd. Prof. Wushishi said the aim is to help Nigerian students and adult learners in the UK who have not been able to complete their secondary education or get equivalent certificates. He added that the initiative supports the Federal Government’s policy of making education accessible to all Nigerians, both at home and abroad.

NECO Expands Beyond Nigeria

Prof. Wushishi explained that opening the London center is part of NECO’s effort to reach Nigerians worldwide. NECO now has exam centers in seven countries, including Saudi Arabia, and new ones are being prepared in Egypt and Burkina Faso.

He also mentioned that the London center will help Nigerians abroad gain recognized qualifications, as NECO certificates are already accepted by many universities such as Birmingham City University and Leeds Trinity University in the UK, as well as schools in the US, Canada, India, China, and Russia.

Government and Embassy Support

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, praised the move, calling it an important step to ensure that no Nigerian learner is left out. He said it supports the Ministry’s goal of involving Nigerians in the diaspora in national educational progress.

Dr. John Ibanga, Director of BEP Education (NECO’s UK partner), said the new centre gives Nigerian students in the UK another chance, especially those who face challenges in the British education system or cannot take the GCSE exams. The centre, he said, will help both young students and adults continue their studies or gain new career qualifications.

During a visit to the Nigerian High Commission in London, Prof. Wushishi discussed the accreditation process and emphasized the importance of the UK as a key location for helping Nigerians overseas access education.

Ambassador Eche Abu-Obe, Head of Political Affairs at the High Commission, also commended NECO for the project. He said it is a welcome development that supports Nigeria’s vision for inclusive education and confirmed the Mission’s readiness to work with NECO.

NECO’s Commitment to Global Access

The opening of the London NECO center shows the Council’s strong commitment to equal learning opportunities for Nigerians everywhere. By reaching out to students and professionals abroad, NECO is strengthening its role as a trusted provider of credible exams and helping more Nigerians achieve their educational goals globally.
